Common questions

What is Tranche 2?

Tranche 2 is the extension of Australia's anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing (AML/CTF) laws to more types of business, including real estate agents, lawyers, accountants and conveyancers. Their obligations started on 1 July 2026.

How do I know if the AML rules apply to my business?

It depends on the services you provide, not your job title. Selling property for clients, or setting up companies and trusts, is regulated. Tax returns, or residential property management on its own, is not. AUSTRAC lists the regulated services, which it calls designated services.

What do I need to do if the rules apply?

In short: enrol with AUSTRAC, assess your money laundering risks, put a written AML/CTF program in place, name a compliance officer, check your customers, train your staff, report suspicious matters and keep records. AUSTRAC publishes free starter kits for each sector.

I missed the enrolment deadline. What now?

Enrol as soon as you can. Businesses that start providing a designated service must enrol with AUSTRAC within 28 days. AUSTRAC explains how to enrol.

Is this legal advice?
